CRAFTS- Handicrafts or also called craft arts are crafts made by hand. The result of this craft has two functions, namely function of usability and also the function of aesthetics.
The more beautiful and complicated the manufacturing process, the more expensive it will be. Every region in Indonesia has handicrafts with its own uniqueness.
The following are handicraft products originating from West Java.
1. Umbrella Geulis
Umbrella geulis is a typical souvenir from the Tasikmalaya area. In traditional art events in West Java, people use this umbrella to decorate the room. Even in 1926, much Dutch noni used this umbrella.
Geulis in Sundanese means “beautiful” so geulis umbrella means beautiful umbrella. Geulis umbrellas are made of patterned paper and cloth. The motifs are divided into two types, namely geometric and non-geometric motifs.
The geometric motifs that stand out are straight, curved, and broken lines. While non-geometric motifs highlight images such as humans, plants, or humans. The frame of this umbrella is made of bamboo.
The way to make a geulis umbrella is to put it together and then give it paper and cloth, after that the end of the umbrella is given starch to make it neat. After that, the umbrella is dried in the sun until the starch hardens. Then the paper or cloth is decorated by painting.
To add an interesting impression, the inside of the umbrella is given a colorful thread. However, this umbrella experienced a decline in demand from 1955 to 1968. At that time, Indonesia adopted an open economic system.
In this way, foreign products can enter Indonesia, including imported umbrella products. This shifted the position of the geulis umbrella and made the geulis umbrella craftsman go bankrupt.
Knowing this, the Tasikmalaya city government did not remain silent. The craftsmen were given assistance in the form of equipment and materials to improve the quality of their geulis umbrella products.
Umbrella geulis gradually began to return to demand in the 1980s. Until now there has been no innovation or modification of the geulis umbrella so the shape of this umbrella is still very original.
2. Cibaduyut Sandals
Cibadyut is located in the southern part of the city of Bandung. This place is the center of West Java’s shoe industry. The majority of Cibaduyut residents have worked as shoe craftsmen since the pre-independence era.

Their work is carried out in their respective homes. Unexpectedly their product shoes attract many people. They are overwhelmed to fulfill consumer orders. For that they recruit workers.
Shoe craftsmen in Cibaduyut also increased to 89 units of craftsmen in 1940 and 150 units in 1950. Until 1978 this place became the center of the shoe industry and even became a tourist destination in 1989.
Not only shoes, but Cibaduyut also started to produce various kinds of accessories made of leather. They produce bags, jackets and so on.
These Cibaduyut shoe craftsmen died when the monetary crisis hit the country in 1998. However, their efforts quickly rose and shined again in the 2000s. Now Cibaduyut is back to being a tourist destination, both foreign and domestic.
The quality of Cibaduyut shoes is no less good than other well-known brands. There are many kinds of shoes of various shapes and even consumers can order shoes according to their wishes.
